Swedish ambassador backs Turkey's EU bid

A Swedish diplomat has backed Turkey's bid to become a member of the European Union.
Christer Asp, an ambassador based in Ankara, said the country needed to continue negotiating for membership, even though there were objections from some quarters.
He cited Sweden as an example of a nation that had also faced opposition when it wanted to join the EU.
However, he stated that it had managed to overcome these problems and become a full member.
Mr Asp commented: "Turkey must continue its EU process.
"Turkish membership in the EU will present an advantage for other countries as well."
He added that Turkey was already a highly popular holiday destination among Swedish nationals, with many choosing to buy property and set up home there permanently.
According to official figures, visitor numbers in the country increased by more than a quarter during the year to October 2007.
