Britons 'to spend Christmas abroad'

Millions of Britons are set to travel abroad this Christmas, a new study has found.

Research by the Post Office found that at least 2.4 million were planning to head overseas for the festive season in order to escape the British weather.

The organisation said that the growth of cheap air travel had also fuelled this trend, as it has made going abroad more widely affordable.

Spain was identified as the most popular destination for festive holidaymakers, attracting nearly one in five people.

This was followed by France and Italy, which were the first choices of six and five per cent respectively.

Post Office spokesperson Gary Fitton commented: "For many people, going abroad for Christmas is a great way to relax and not have to worry about cooking Christmas dinner."

This follows research by Co-operative Travel which indicated that there would an 11 per cent increase in the number of people travelling abroad during this year's festive season
