4 million foreigners now live in Spain

The number of expatriates living in Spain has exceeded the four million mark for the very first time, it has been revealed.
According to the National Statistics Institute, 4.2 million foreign nationals have Spanish residency permits as of March 2008.
The figures, cited by the Typically Spanish website, showed that nearly two-thirds of these people are based in Madrid, Catalonia, Valencia and Andalucia.
In addition, the statistics revealed that 40 per cent of foreigners hail from other European Union countries, including Britain, Italy and Portugal.
Spain was also found to be a hotspot for expats from eastern Europe, as Romanians and Bulgarians both made it to a list of the top ten immigrant nationalities.
People from the UK were ranked fifth in this list, as more than 206,000 Britons now reside in Spain on a permanent basis.
According to the Spanish Property Owners Guild, many people are choosing to set up home in the country in order to improve their quality of life.
