Locations - Costa del Sol
Unique climate
The Costa del Sol covers around 150km of the coast of the Andalucia region, including areas of the Malaga and Cadiz provinces. Its location on the southerly coast of Spain means that it has a unique climate, enjoying warm winters and hot summers, but without the extreme heat of other parts of Spain that can be uncomfortable for visitors.
Immense popularity
Its climate, natural beauty and encouraging approach to tourism have earned the Costa del Sol an immense popularity among tourists, particularly among the British. Indeed, several of the towns along this stretch of coast have earned a reputation for being over-developed, as well as over-run by expatriates.
Budget destinations
The likes of Torremolinos and Fuengirola have long been a popular choice for budget foreign holidays, but over the years much of the Spanish charm that first made them popular has been lost as cheap English eateries and pubs have taken over. Other areas, such as Puerto Banus, have gained a reputation for being pricey resorts where Europe’s wealthy come to be seen, with their expensive cars and yachts. None of these offer an experience of the ‘real’ Spain.
Established tourist destination
Nevertheless, property investors could not hope to find a more established tourist destination. Although in some areas the high prices reflect its popularity, there are still areas along the coast where prices are comparatively low. Such areas benefit from the same developed infrastructure, wide range of facilities, established rental market and cheap transport links as their better-known counterparts, but have retained more of their traditional appeal.
Alternative areas
Lesser-known but attractive areas include Manilva, Sabinillas and Casares. The coast is well developed all the way up to Malaga International Airport and prices reflect the popularity of the area. Similarly, the city of Marbella is a cosmopolitan centre which, despite a strong tourist appeal, has a strong domestic demand for property. Any concessions to tourism have not been made at the expense of its authentic charm.
Costa del Golf
One of the great attractions of this stretch of the Spanish coast is its golfing facilities. The mild year-round climate means that golfers can potentially play at any time of the year, and developers have taken advantage of the stunning scenery and sea views when creating the many golf courses (around 40) that have given the coast the nickname ‘Costa del Golf’.
