Spanish Algarve
The Costa de la Luz (Coast of Light) is also known as the ‘Spanish Algarve’, as it runs from the town of Tarifa on the southernmost tip of Spain by the Straits of Gibraltar, to Ayamonte on the east of the Portuguese border. Although this stretch of coast is just a short drive from the neighbouring Costa del Sol, it offers tourists and investors an entirely different range of towns and villages.
Golden beaches
Facing the waves of the Atlantic Ocean, the coast along the Costa de la Luz mostly comprises long stretches of wide, golden beaches with fine sand and clear, clean water. The coast is dotted with numerous villages and towns, many of which are becoming increasingly popular with visitors and property buyers looking for an unspoilt part of Spain. In general terms, the coast is at a point in its development where prices are beginning to grow and it is becoming more familiar and popular with tourists, particularly as new transport links are making the various destinations more accessible. However, the expatriate population is comparatively small, and the communities of this area retain their authentic Spanish feel.
Tarifa
The winds and the waves of the Atlantic make the beaches ideal for a range of water sports, and the town of Tarifa in particular attracts windsurfers and kitesurfers from all over the world. As a result Tarifa has evolved into one of Spain’s trendiest resorts, combining its surf lifestyle with aspects of Moroccan culture – situated as it is just a few kilometres away – to great effect. Property prices are rising accordingly, though still compare favourably with some other parts of the country.
Cadiz
The Costa de la Luz includes the city of Cadiz, situated on a peninsula with an old town almost entirely surrounded by water. The winding narrow streets of the old town and its long stretches of golden sands against the backdrop of the city have put Cadiz firmly on the map as a tourist destination. In addition to that, it has a sizeable domestic population, supplemented each year by thousands of students, ensuring that Cadiz does not turn into a tourism-driven city.
Areas with potential
Other towns and villages along the Costa de la Luz that may be of interest to investors include Conil de la Frontera, a fishing town which has preserved its traditions despite rising tourist demand from within Spain and abroad; the white village of Vejer de la Frontera, set slightly inland on a hilltop; and the estuary town of Sanlucar de Barrameda, with its stunning sunsets, excellent food and drink, and strong flamenco tradition.
