Locations - Costa de Almeria
Rising popularity
In recent years the resorts of the Costa de Almeria, in the south-east of Spain, have been recognised by overseas property investors and tourists as an alternative to the Costa del Sol. The rising popularity of the area is unsurprising, given that the region enjoys over 3,000 hours of sunshine a year, mild winter temperatures and warm, clean waters. A number of modern tourist resorts have developed from the fishing villages and towns along the coast, and tourism accounts for a growing proportion of the region’s economy.
Diverse area
The geographical diversity of the Costa de Almeria means that while to the east there is the Cabo del Gato-Nijar natural park, with only a few populated areas along the coast, by contrast the west has the busy tourist resorts of Aguadulce, Roquetas de Mar and Almerimar. This area caters for its visitors well; there are a number of golf courses, marinas and many hotels.
Tasteful development
As a whole, the extent of the development of the coast has been moderate. It is hoped that planning restrictions imposed by the authorities, forbidding the construction of coastal properties exceeding two storeys, will prevent the Costa de Almeria being ruined by its own popularity.
Improving infrastructure
Development and improvement to the area’s infrastructure continues, and improved transport links and entertainment facilities have already boosted visitor numbers, as well as the number of overseas property buyers looking to purchase here.
Roquetas de Mar
Roquetas de Mar is one of the most popular resorts along this stretch of coast. Its origins as a fishing village that existed as far back as the Roman times give it a unique feel, with white houses scattered on the hillside and an old town of narrow, winding streets. However, with tourism a growing contributor to its economy, the town has adapted to cater for its visitors. Hotels now line the beach, numerous restaurants and bars exist primarily for the tourist crowd, and a range of activities from golf to sailing or horse riding are offered.
Mojacar
The original village of Mojacar is set a short distance back from the beach, in the foothills of the Sierra Cabrera. However, Mojacar also covers a second area, Mojacar Playa, which as the name suggests is located along the beach. The two are around 2km apart. The village overlooks the sea, and has plenty of restaurants, cafés and boutique shops. The beach stretches for 17km, of which 7km are developed but even this part includes three Blue Flag beaches, thanks to the considerate nature of the development.
