International flights
Most of the major cities in Europe, including London, offer flights to Slovenia with the country’s national airline, Adria Airways. Other airlines that fly between the UK and Slovenia include easyJet, First Choice and Ryanair. There are three main international airports, found in Ljubljana, Maribor, and Portoroz. There are no domestic airports in the country, but as Slovenia is so small there is no real need for them.
Domestic travel
Visitors will often find it more convenient to fly to an airport in one of Slovenia’s neighbouring countries and travel to their destination from there. For example, the popular resort of Portoroz is most easily accessible by flying into Trieste-Ronchi in Italy which is 75km west of the town, rather than flying into the airport in Ljubljana, approximately 145km away. Other nearby airports useful for access into Slovenia are Klagenfurt in Austria, and Pula in Croatia.
Trains to Slovenia
It is easy to get into Slovenia by train, and this is also a convenient way of travelling within the country. There are busy routes between Ljubljana in Slovenia and Venice in Italy, Budapest in Hungary, and Zagreb in Croatia. The prices and conditions of rail travel differ depending on the route. However, discounts are often available, and certain routes offer cheap tickets on a first come, first served basis. In terms of comfort, a general rule is that services travelling north, and away from Ljubljana, will be comfortable and offer a good range of facilities. Travelling south back to Ljubljana will often mean a more basic level of service.
Trains within Slovenia
Most parts of the country are accessible by train, but routes are not always straightforward. Gaps in the route and the fact that many routes are circular mean that a journey will often require some planning. However, trains are a cheaper option than the bus, and recent investment into the system means that trains tend to be of a high standard and keep to time.
Travelling by road
Buses can be a good way of getting to some of the destinations not easily reachable by train. Equally, a growing proportion of the population now drive themselves, to the extent that the public transport system has suffered. Foreigners driving on Slovenian roads will usually find them to be well-maintained, and navigation is made easier by good sign-posting. There is also a good road network connecting Slovenia to its neighbouring countries.
