Bled
Stunning lake
The area of the Julian Alps includes a number of popular tourist resorts, the best known of which is probably the town of Bled. Bled is a small town with around 5,000 permanent residents. One of the resort’s main features is its stunning lake with an island that has its own church. The lake is also used for competitive rowing events.
Established health tourism
Bled is no newcomer on the tourism scene; its first wellness centre opened in 1895, and as a town it had its 1000th anniversary in 2004. Its thermal springs are popular, and as well as spa tourism it also has its own golf course, casino and conference hall. With its variety of attractions, it is popular throughout the year. As well as being relatively cheap, properties in the area therefore have strong rental potential.
Portoroz
Main beach resort
As one of Slovenia’s oldest tourist resorts, the coastal town of Portoroz is now known as a popular conference centre as well as one of the country’s main beach resorts for holidaymakers.
Variety of attractions
Whatever the purpose of their stay, the town caters well for all visitors. It has a range of restaurants, an attractive marina and seafront, various sports facilities and the well-known Grand Casino Portoroz. The nearest airport to the town is Trieste-Ronchi in Italy, which is 75km west of the town. Otherwise, Portoroz is 145km from the capital of Ljubljana and its Brnik International Airport.
Maribor
Slovenia’s second city
As the second city of Slovenia, Maribor competes with the country’s capital for visitors, and as a result the people of the city have become famous for their hospitality. It is therefore fitting that the city has become a popular congress centre. The city is located in the foothills of Pohorje, and its population is around 115,000. Like Ljubljana, it is an old city, and its architecture reflects that; the remains of the defence wall surrounding Maribor’s old town can still be seen.
Cheap flights
In June 2007, Ryanair announced that it would be the first budget airline to offer flights between Maribor and London. This is good news for the property market in the city, as cheap flights often have the effect of raising the profile of an area, and so boosting its tourist and property markets.
