Travel and transport

Air travel

Flight connections have nearly doubled almost every year in recent times and international flights now service Bratislava airport regularly throughout the year from cities in many parts of Western and Eastern Europe and the Middle East. There are additional scheduled summer services to Croatia. Domestic flights from Bratislava airport include regular connections to the Tatras mountains, to the city of Kosice and to the central part of the country. The budget airline Sky Europe is the largest provider in Slovakia, although the national carrier, Slovak Airlines, has started to increase its services.

Travel from Vienna

Some people travelling to Slovakia do so via Vienna as it has one of Europe’s busiest airports and is only one hour away from Bratislava. There are buses that run every two to four hours from early morning until late evening that shuttle travellers to Slovakia via the Austrian capital city.

By rail

Most Slovakian cities have good train services that link them with with major European cities. Direct trains connect frequently with Prague (taking four-and-a-half hours), Budapest (three hours) and Vienna (one hour). One daily night train connects Bratislava with Moscow (taking 33 hours) and one with Warsaw (10.5 hours). A daily train to Kiev (which takes 21 hours) passes through Kosice on its way from Budapest. Most European national carriers include Slovakia train stations in their searchable databases and the national rail service has a good website with schedule information. In general, Slovakian trains are more comfortable than buses although onboard toilets can be primitive.

By road

Incidents of car theft are common in Slovakia and therefore car rental agencies can sometimes restrict travel within the country. There are, however, no legal restrictions at Slovakian borders when driving a car into the country, and you are free to stay for up to several weeks. Slovak law requires international driver's licenses for those wanting to rent cars. There are a number of car rental agencies in different cities, but for short-term rentals the widest selection is in the capital Bratislava. Some agencies will deliver the car to you anywhere in Slovakia.

Other alternatives

From mid-April to September, it is possible to take a hydrofoil on the River Danube from Bratislava to Vienna, which takes only one-and-a-half hours, or to Budapest which takes four hours. It is also possible to simply walk in and out of Slovakia, which can avoid the need to buy an expensive international ticket. For example, you can easily walk across the bridge over the Danube between Slovakia and Hungary.
