Kosice
Slovakia’s second largest city contains yet more historic treasures and is the location of the country’s largest preserved area. Like Bratislava, it has a pedestrianised, cobblestoned old town with beautiful Baroque and Neo-classical architecture. Its oval-shaped main square is the location for one of Slovakia’s most beautiful cathedrals. Kosice is home to a diverse mix of nationalities: Hungarians and Romany gypsies among them. The city is ideally located as a base for tourists wanting to explore the caves of the Slovak Karst area, as well as the Herl’any geyser.
Banska Stiavnica
Some say Banska Stiavnica is the prettiest town in Slovakia; it has UNESCO World Heritage Status in part due to its array of beautifully preserved buildings from the Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Neo-Classical periods. Between the 13th and 18th centuries the town was one of the most productive gold and silver mining centres in Europe, and its mining history is still evident to this day, with an open-air museum and a mining academy. Behind this academy are the popular Botanical Gardens.
Piestany
This quiet spa resort town in the beautiful valley of the Vah River is renowned for its successful treatment of arthritis. Many treatment methods are based on the extraordinary therapeutic effects of the area's thermal springs and curative mud. People from Eastern Europe and Arab countries have been coming to this area for years to benefit from such treatments. In addition to the spa facilities, Piestany offers beautiful parks and recreational areas, as well as a museum which includes the ruins of a 9th century castle.
Ski resorts
Slovakia boasts five main ski resorts in the Tatra Mountains and Eastern Slovakia. The main resorts are Chopok Jasna, which is 15km away from Liptovsky Mikulas in the Low Tatra mountains; Donovaly, located near Banska Bystrica also in the Low Tatra mountains; Plejsy, situated in the city of Krompachy in the mountain range Slovensky Raj, in Eastern Slovakia; Jasna, located in the Low Tatras National Park on the slopes of Chopok Mountain; and finally Strbske Pleso, which offers alpine skiing in the High Tatras mountains. The property market in the ski resorts, as indeed for all of these Slovakian tourist towns and cities, is largely driven by the tourism industry; only 312 out of 1000 Slovakian citizens own a house or a flat, as compared to the Czech Republic where the number is 424 out of 1000.
