Alternative destination
As an alternative to the beach and spa resorts of the Black Sea Coast, Transylvania is gaining in popularity among tourists. This mainly rural region is one of Romania’s most famous areas, being the home of the man who inspired Dracula – Prince Vlad Tepes. It is a naturally beautiful area with a landscape of mountains, forests and valleys, and it has also been quick to adopt and develop such tourist draws as ski resorts and health spas. The area is popular with those looking for an active outdoor break, and is particularly popular among hiking and skiing enthusiasts. There is an emerging trend for luxury spa development in this region, and this is expected to attract a following among the more affluent sector of the tourist market.
Traditional appeal
Transylvania’s cultural and historic sites are intrinsic to its appeal, and the region has numerous small traditional towns, many of which with old churches and defensive towers. The fact that life in many parts of Transylvania has changed so little over the years is a major attraction to visitors in itself. It is one of the few places on the continent where travellers can still see horse-drawn carts being used as a primary mode of transport, and where the local people still work the fields in traditional clothing, with traditional tools and using old methods. During its years under dictatorship, there were efforts to modernise Transylvania and bring it up-to-date through the construction of industrial projects – such projects are now largely abandoned.
Old and new property
The Transylvania region offers investors an alternative to properties in the coastal resorts. Buyers have a choice between a property in a new development, or existing houses which can be bought cheaply but which will often require extensive renovation. The renovation of an older property in a foreign country will always raise its own problems, but the result is likely to be popular with holidaymakers and naturally will have risen in value. However, as spa retreats and other luxury developments become more popular, a purchase in a well-located new development would also have strong investment potential.
