Warm climate
The most popular tourist resorts of Romania are those dotted along its Black Sea Coast – a 245km long stretch of coastline which enjoys a warm climate. The southern section of the coast has a number of family-friendly beach resorts alongside its established and well-appointed spa resorts, while further north are its nature reserves - protected areas which are free from the construction that comes with popular tourist areas. The beach resorts vary between affordable holiday towns, and more exclusive retreats, geared towards a more affluent visitor. All along the coast, the sea is almost free from currents so is safe for swimming, making the resorts particularly suitable for families.
Coastal resorts
There are many villages of historical interest along the coast, so visitors can enjoy Romania’s cultural appeal while still having the convenience of a modern level of amenities in the resorts. In all, there are 16 main resorts along this ‘riviera’, including spas as well as traditional seaside villages. Of these, Costinesti is the most popular among young people, while Neptun is known for once being the destination of choice for former dictator Ceausescu. Indeed, the coast had a successful tourism industry during the 1970s. Ceausescu encouraged holidaymakers to Romania, and many of today’s Black Sea Coast resorts originally became popular during this period.
Spa tourism
The appeal of the Black Sea Coast’s spa resorts dates back to long before the current trend for spa and relaxation retreats, and for years people have travelled to the area to relieve a range of ailments from arthritis to nervous disorders. The spas of Eforie Nord and Mangalia are famous for the rejuvenating effects of their mud baths and ‘Gerovital’ and ‘Aslavital’ treatments.
The Romanian resorts of the Black Sea Coast are all served by transport links from Constanta. This is Romania’s main port, and it has its own appeal as a historic coastal city, particularly with younger visitors who flock to the town for its numerous restaurants, bars and nightclubs. This busy town is accessible by road, plane, train and ferry.
