Polish flights boost airport passenger numbers

A British airport has reported that the launch of new flights to Poland have helped boost its annual passenger numbers.
About 340,000 people passed through the gates of East Midlands Airport last month - 15.8 per cent more than in January 2007.
Commenting on the findings, the facility cited bmibaby's new flight to Warsaw as one reason for the increased passenger numbers.
Penny Coates, managing director of East Midlands Airport, said the figures showed that it was successfully meeting the needs of local consumers.
She commented: "This is a tremendous start to the year and we are hopeful that the momentum will continue throughout 2008."
This follows a period of positive growth during the previous year, during which passenger numbers rose by more than 14 per cent.
Earlier this month, the Telegraph credited budget airlines with helping to open up eastern Europe to prospective investors from the UK.
