Growth in tourism
Poland is experiencing considerable growth in its tourist industry, particularly as a city-break or day-trip destination. In 2005 there were 64.6 million arrivals to the country from abroad, up 4.3% on the previous year. Among the growth areas were a large increase in day-trippers from Germany, and a 12.6% growth in visits from other, non-adjacent EU countries.
Arrivals from non-EU countries
Arrivals of non-EU overseas tourists (defined by the Polish Tourist Board as being from USA, Australia, Japan, South Korea and Canada) went up by 27.6%. Of the 64.6 million arrivals, 15.2 million were classed as tourist arrivals, that is visitors who stay at least one night. This figure is up 6.4% from 2004’s figure of 14.3 million.
The rapid growth of the budget air carriers is reflected by the number of arrivals by air which rose by 30% in both 2004 and 2005.
Rise of eco-tourism
Eco-tourism and rural holidays are seeing a surge in popularity. Many farmers are now offering accommodation, offering visitors the chance to access some of the country’s most beautiful rural scenery while gaining an insight into the workings of a Polish farm – and sampling some superb local food and drink into the bargain. In most areas, the local tourist information bureau can provide a list of farms providing accommodation, and the Polish tourist board also publishes a guide, written in English, detailing farms throughout the country offering holiday accommodation.
Golf and seaside tourism
Golf is a relatively new sport in Poland, but it is increasing in popularity, especially with the emerging Polish middle class. There are now more than 30 courses across the country, the first of which was the Amber Baltic Golf Club, which opened in 1992. Other notable courses are the Royal Krakow, Binowo Park and the Knights, which is near Wroclaw.
Poland has two Blue Flag beaches – at Swinoujscie and Gdansk-Brzezno – and three marinas, all of which are in the Gdansk/Tri-City area.
