Morocco reports surge in tourist numbers

The number of tourists choosing to visit Morocco has risen this year, according to new figures.
Research by the country's department of tourism found that in the first seven months of 2007, tourism increased by ten per cent on the previous year.
Approximately 1.7 million visitors were said to have come from France, while 795,000 Spaniards visited the country, along with 261,000 Britons.
Thousands of tourists from other European countries such as the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Italy were also recorded.
Figures showed that Marrakech was the most popular part of the country with visitors, ahead of other regions such as Casablanca and Tangier.
The increase in tourist numbers was attributed to the growth of low-cost airlines, many of which have recently begun offering services to Morocco from major European airports.
Earlier this month, Obelisk International said that routes offered by budget airlines could possibly indicate which areas will be investment hotspots in the future.
