Locations - Tangier
Strategic location
The city of Tangier is on the north coast of Morocco looking over the Strait of Gibraltar, and out at the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean. This strategic position has made it the focus of rivalry throughout Europe.
Bohemian resort
From the end of the war up until 1956, Tangier was an International Zone and turned into a well-known spot for millionaires, spies, and various criminals. Like Marrakech, Tangier has enjoyed a name as a bohemian resort, and for a period was popular with many artistic types, from Jack Kerouac to Tennessee Williams.
Centre of industry
Tangier is Morocco’s second largest centre of industry after Casablanca. Its economy is diversified, with tourism as a major contributor, and foreign investment has boosted the number and quality of coastal resorts. Several large projects are due to be completed during 2007 and 2008, including the second ‘Tangier-Mediterranean port’ and industrial parks. Currently, one port caters for the entire flow of goods and passengers (over a million a year). The new port will boost employment, and is expected to attract further investment into the area.
Rising population
The development of Tangier is necessary, not just to accommodate a rising number of visitors to the area, but also to keep up with the city’s rising resident population. Over the last 20 years, the population of the city has quadrupled as Moroccans migrate to Tangier from smaller towns and villages. This has also created a number of districts on the outskirts of the city, home to thousands of the area’s poorer residents.
Beach destination
The beaches are one of Tangier’s main attractions, and its location in the north of the country ensures that the climate is not as harsh as, for example, Marrakech. The temperature in the heat of the summer averages around 28ºC (compared to around 37ºC in Marrakech), and in winter the average is 13ºC.
Increasing accessibility
Airlines operate routes between Tangier Airport and London (as well as Paris and Malaga), and as development of the area’s tourist facilities continues, increased transport links are expected to make the city more accessible. The level of investment pouring into Tangier suggests that property prices are likely to grow, and the city will soon have the quality of infrastructure in place to support its rapidly growing population.
