New markets challenge Tuscany

While Tuscany remains the dominant force in the market for investment property in Italy, other areas are "up and coming", according to a regional expert.
With a famously passionate culture, beautiful scenery and mouthwatering cuisine, Italy appeals to scores of investors, from buyers looking for buy-to-let properties to retirees looking for a relaxing place in the sun.
Annie Temple, managing director of medpropertyshop.com, said that Italian property was attractive in countless ways.
"The main markets in Italy are Tuscany and Umbria," she added. "Then it goes to Le Marche, Puglia and then Abruzzo and Calabria. That's how it runs.
"They all have different attractions. Tuscany is the cream of the crop. Umbria is more central and it is more historical and classical. A lot of writers and artists live in Umbria because it gives people a lot of incentive and creation. Le Marche has some really nice old property.
She added: Puglia has some very beautiful coastlines and it's dominated by trulli - the little white round houses - and masserias - which are the big square mansions. It was very popular a couple of years ago, lots of English live there, and lots of renovations have gone on."
Overseas Property UK recently pinpointed Calabria as the next Italian property hotspot.
