Italy is 'UK tourists' favourite European country'
Italy has come top in a poll of the most popular holiday destinations in Europe among Britons.
A survey by Saga Holidays found that 14 per cent of UK holidaymakers favoured Italy above over countries such as Spain, which was the first choice of 13 per cent of respondents.
Cyprus, France, Portugal and Turkey were also named as favourite holiday destinations, which could represent good news for owners of rental properties in these countries.
Commenting on the findings, Andrew Goodsell of Saga said it was good to see that established European markets were still proving to be popular with British tourists.
He added: "It's interesting to note that Italy has now overtaken Spain at the top of the holiday charts."
The survey found that Italy was also a popular choice with different age groups, with both over-55s and 25 to 44-year-olds citing it as their preferred option.
This comes after Barclays said that these countries were also attracting considerable interest from people planning to buy property abroad.
