Italy 'a travel hot spot' for 2008

Italy is predicted to be a hot spot for American travelers in 2008, according to a travel writer and editor.
The Mediterranean country, along with other locations such as Eastern Europe and Lisbon, has been identified as one of the top places for US tourists to visit next year by the US Tour Operators Association.
Pauline Frommer told the Associated Press that Italy is the country that is most often asked about by people who phone in on her travel radio show.
The writer also said that she has noticed a trend for travelers to look to alternative accommodations, such as renting private homes.
"It has to do with money and it also has to do with the yearning to get out of the cookie-cutter vacation and see a more authentic side," she remarked.
Meanwhile, the Association of British Travel Agents has indicated that Italy's mountains have received large amounts of snow recently, which could attract sports travelers to the country.
