Calabria 'to become leading investment hotspot'

Italy's Calabria province could become a major hotspot for overseas property buyers, an expert has predicted.
Bernardo Retana, director of the International Property Investment Network, stated that many property professionals are anticipating a surge of interest in the region.
He said figures within the industry believe Calabria will be one of the most popular markets among both Italian and northern European investors.
Interest in the province was triggered by recent accessibility improvements, which has boosted tourism in a region that had been hitherto overlooked by holidaymakers.
As a result, the area has benefited from infrastructure improvements, new shops and amenities and growth in its rental market.
Furthermore, strict planning regulations which prevent overdevelopment along the coast are also in effect.
This means it offers sustainable lifestyle and financial attractions to foreign property buyers.
Mr Retana commented: "I do believe Calabria will follow the footsteps of other Mediterranean success stories."
According to Holiday-Rentals, more than one in ten European properties that are owned by Britons are in Italy.
