Calabria has 'unique' mountain ranges

Southern Italy's Calabria region's three mountain ranges have diverse personalities that could appeal to broad range of people, according to an expat who has made the area her home.
Frances Petroni moved to Calabria in 1971 upon her marriage and has taught and lived in the area around Spezzano Albanese ever since.
Writing in the Telegraph, she described Pollino, Sila and Aspromonte as being "unique" to each other, with their own characteristic flora and fauna.
Pollino is in the north of Calabria, Sila forming a plateau across the centre of the region, while Aspromonte is at the southern-most point with sea on three sides.
"Although the sea seems ever present in Calabria it must not be forgotten that it is mainly a mountainous region," Ms Petroni wrote.
Of Aspromonte, she said that the "mighty mountainous complex", with a highest point of 1,995 metres on Montalto, is created out of wide terraces, while the lower slopes are populated by vineyards and fruit orchards.
According to www.emmeti.it , the Sila uplands are of glacial creation and the culture of the communities there is a mix of Greek and Albanian.
