Investment Property in Italy
Locations - Southern Italy
Stunning scenery
The names of many of Italy’s areas and cities are familiar throughout the world, and these destinations see thousands upon thousands of visitors every year. By comparison, the regions in the south of Italy are little known by overseas visitors, despite their stunning scenery, and parts of the region are now being tipped to rival the current Mediterranean tourism hotspots. The south of Italy has long been the less prosperous part of the country, and this is still evident today in some areas, but efforts have been made to redress the balance and the southern regions are now beginning to become more competitive economically. Its growing appeal among tourists and accordingly among property investors will only aid this growth.
Calabria
Calabria makes up the ‘toe’ of Italy, and this area is starting to establish itself as a destination for holidaymakers. The town lacks the glamour of some of its more established northern counterparts, but investors are currently attracted by the availability of cheap property, along with the security of planning restrictions which mean that the area’s appeal will not be ruined by over-development. Calabria has the advantage of being a naturally stunning part of Italy, with large forested areas and deserted beaches against a backdrop of mountains. The difficultly of farming such a landscape is part of the reason for the poverty that the inhabitants of the area have suffered in the past.
Puglia
The Puglia region is being transformed from what was predominantly a farming region into a popular tourist area. Puglia makes up the ‘heel’ of the boot, and despite its location is one of the more cosmopolitan areas of the south, thanks to its excellent transport links. The region includes the Gargano Peninsula, the plateau of the Murgia, and the generally flat Salentine Peninsula. It is famous for its ‘trulli’ houses – the cone-roofed stone huts that are common in the north of the area. Its stunning beaches on the Adriatic Coast are also a major tourist draw. Puglia is a large region, though no more than 30km wide at any point so any location will be relatively close to the sea.
