Unexplored potential

The region of Abruzzo is considered by many Italians to be a mountainous and quiet area. However, with its combination of ski resorts, beaches and pretty countryside it has all the hallmarks of a popular holiday destination and property buyers are increasingly interested in exploring this potential, particularly since real estate in the area is currently so cheap. A property in Abruzzo is around 50% of the price of the equivalent property in Umbria, and around 40% of the equivalent in Tuscany.

Peaceful and unspoiled

The Abruzzo region predominantly comprises hills and mountains – with many of the higher peaks over 2,000m in height - from the Adriatic Sea over to the Apennine Mountains. It is one of Italy’s most sparsely populated areas, as many of its original inhabitants have left the area for the employment opportunities of Italy’s cities or for overseas. Abruzzo is therefore one of Italy’s most peaceful and unspoiled destinations. Despite this secluded feel, transport links to the region are good by road and air, so access is not a problem.

Abruzzo’s towns

The town of L’Aquila is situated in the north of the Abruzzo region, near to the area’s ski resorts. It is the capital of Abruzzo, and is home to the National Museum of Abruzzo as well as a beautiful castle and two famous churches. Pescara is another of the region’s best known towns, as well as one of its most modern. The town has an international airport and access to Croatia by ferry, and its tourists have 16km of beaches to enjoy.

Ski resorts

Abruzzo’s 21 ski resorts have a total of 368km of pistes, and day trips from Rome to these resorts are common. The season lasts from January to April. Abruzzo’s most popular ski resort is Roccaraso, which has pistes ranging in altitude from 1,650m to 2,140m, and these often have more snow than the Alps, further north.
