Christmas shoppers travel to mainland Europe

More people are travelling to the European mainland to buy Christmas presents for friends and relatives, according to experts.
The Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) stated that an increasing number of consumers were choosing to visit destinations such as Germany in order to acquire bargain items, which is potentially good news for investors in the country.
Christmas markets were said to be highly popular destinations, largely because of they offered a sample of the local culture as well as good products.
Sean Tipton, spokesperson for ABTA, commented: "It's as much for the cultural experience as for the shopping."
He added that Christmas markets had been getting "more and more popular" over the last few years, as they were very traditional and resembled a scene from the 19th Century.
ABTA also highlighted the impact that festive tourism would have on the aviation sector, saying that the lead-up to Christmas would be a "very busy" period for the industry.
According to a recent survey by Kayak.co.uk, 75 per cent of people in the UK have thought about travelling abroad this Christmas.
