Tourism booming in Malta

In news that could boost property prices on the island, new figures have shown a significant increase in the amount of tourists visiting Malta.
According to the Maltese National Statistics Office, 71,281 tourists visited in March 2007, an increase of 10.8 per cent from the 2006 figure.
The study also showed a huge increase in tourist expenditure, with around £37.5 million spent in March, 12.8 per cent more than in the same period last year.
Membership of the EU has certainly led to a tourism and property boom in Malta and the island is attracting visitors due to its rich cultural heritage, with the most world heritage sites per square kilometre in the world.
Tourism minister Dr Francis Zammit Dimech recently told the Malta Independent of the appeal of the island's historical credentials:
"The market share of tourists who visited Malta for its culture and heritage last year stood at 12.8 per cent," he said.
He continued: "Figures for tourist arrivals for the culture and heritage segment indicate that, during 2006, 143,460 tourists visited Malta for our culture and heritage."
The Maltese government recently announced plans to attract increasing numbers of tourists and foreign investors, through showcase websites and identifying niche markets.
