Special insurance a must for retirees

British buyers looking to retire to the sun should take out specialist travel insurance, American Express has recommended.
The credit card giant has advised that tailored cover would provide greater protection for Brits spending several months abroad than would a standard travel insurance package.
The firm also advised that when investigating your desired overseas property, annual and multi-trip travel insurance might prove a preferable financial option to taking out a number of single trip policies.
An extended policy would offer up to 18 months of protection, giving retirees who wish to be thorough in their search for an overseas haven the chance to make several trips abroad, safe in the knowledge that they are covered against any eventuality.
Joanne Field, marketing manager at American Express, explained: "If you fall ill on holiday the last thing you will feel up to tackling is paperwork and bureaucracy to get medical attention."
According to Easier.com, one in eight Britons will plan to retire abroad by 2016 and it is thought that around two million UK citizens will own an overseas property by 2025.
