Brit buyers lost in Cretan maze

UK buyers looking for a touch of the ancient world should move quickly, with property on the Greek island of Crete in great demand.
Once the setting for such legendary tales as Theseus' battle with the Minotaur and the disastrous flight of Icarus, Crete is now the site of a property boom.
According to Home.co.uk, an improving infrastructure and large-scale development are drawing more investors to the picturesque island.
James Ward, manager of the Athens office of surveying firm Lambert Smith Hampton told the website:
"Land is definitely in big demand here. There are already several high-end developments in progress, with more on the way."
Mr Ward's comments were echoed by expat Carol Palioudakis, who was so bewitched by the island's stunning scenery that she moved there 20 years ago:
"Property prices are on a sharp increase; we've noticed a 40 per cent rise in the past year, if it's anywhere near the sea.
"Also, there's been a dramatic improvement in building quality, as well as local infrastructure."
The majority of Cretan estate agents now offer 100 per cent mortgages for British investors.
