French healthcare reforms 'will not go ahead'

Planned reforms to the French healthcare system will not go ahead following a wave of opposition.
The country's government recently stated that foreign expatriates who had taken early retirement and now lived in France should not be entitled to free healthcare, since they are not contributing to the economy.
This would have resulted in the thousands of expats from places such as the UK being forced to take out private healthcare insurance and potentially deterred people from moving there in future.
However, opposition from politicians in Britain and in the European Parliament has prompted a U-turn from the French government, which has been widely welcomed by those lobbying against the reforms.
Labour MEP Mary Honeyball told the Press Association: "This news comes as a huge relief for many British expats living in France."
The Times recently highlighted the country as a popular choice for retirees from the UK, due to its financial and lifestyle attractions.
