Consumers take the train abroad

A growing number of people in the UK are using the train to go to short-haul destinations in Europe, it has emerged.
According to Eurostar, the introduction of a high-speed rail link from London to Paris has contributed to a significant increase in passenger numbers.
The firm stated that the number of people it carried between January and March 2008 was 21.3 per cent up on the same period of last year.
Commenting on the figures, Eurostar said the increase is partly because it is now able to offer reduced journey times and greater connectivity to consumers.
Chief executive Richard Brown added that growing public concern over climate change has affecting people's travel habits, as many no longer wish to fly abroad.
He commented: "We don't have all the answers, but we are chipping away at reducing our environmental impact and we will keep at it."
According to currency specialist HiFX, the new rail links have led to some people looking at moving to France and commuting to work in the UK.
