Locations - The Côte d'Azur
French Riviera
Commonly known as the French Riviera, the Côte d'Azur is the stretch of the French coast from Cassis to Menton on the Italian border. The area includes some of France’s best known and most exclusive resorts, including Cannes - famous for its film festival where the Palme d’Or is awarded every year, the municipality of Monaco, Nice and St Tropez.
Established resort
The Côte d'Azur is one of Europe’s most fashionable and exclusive resorts, and has long attracted an upmarket crowd from overseas. It originally became popular as a winter destination, where visitors came to avoid the harsh weather in more northerly countries, but has since evolved into a popular destination for summer holidays as well.
Nice
Nice is the capital of the Côte d'Azur, and one of its most popular resorts. It has a uniquely calm climate, as its surrounding hills protect the city from the often harsh northern winds. Its artistic history means the city today has a number of well-regarded art galleries. Just as parts of the Languedoc-Roussillon region are heavily influenced by its neighbouring Spain, Nice has a noticeable Italian feel to it.
Popular holiday destination
Despite being known as an exclusive resort, Nice welcomes a wide range of visitors, particularly now that budget airlines offer flights to the city. Its combination of excellent climate with the cultural attractions and facilities of a modern city ensure a year-round stream of visitors. It is an increasingly popular weekend break destination, and many visitors stay long enough to fully explore the surrounding area as well as Nice itself. It is ideally situated for visiting the other resorts of the Côte d'Azur, such as St Tropez, Cannes and Monaco.
Exclusive market
As one of the most established regions within the stable French property market, the Côte d'Azur attracts buyers looking for a secure investment, a large proportion of who wish to keep the property as a second home as well as an investment. It is therefore a popular choice among investors from the City of London, who are cash rich and looking for an accessible destination with top class facilities. Since 2000, property prices in the area have doubled, and currently between 30 – 50% of buyers are thought to be British.
