Travel and transport

Travel by air

Most people arriving into Egypt do so by air. The country’s popularity as a tourist destination means that there are regular flights from the UK and it is less than five hours flying time away from mainland Europe. A large number of airlines operate in and out of the capital city Cairo and Egyptair offers international flights in and out of Luxor and Hurghada. Charter flights from London also fly in to Cairo, Luxor and Hurghada.

Egyptian airports

There are nine airports in total in the country that serve all of the major cities. The newly modernised Cairo International Airport is the main gateway to Egypt and is approximately 15 miles north-east of the capital city. Its two terminals receive flights from major world cities including those in North America, Europe, Asia and Africa. Egyptair flies daily from Cairo to Alexandria, Luxor, Aswan, Abu Simbel and Hurghada. Located in central Egypt, Luxor International Airport serves the Nile Valley and is a convenient entrance point for people heading to the popular tourist destinations of the region.

By bus

Buses serve all towns in the country but can be overcrowded and, at times, of a very poor standard. More reliable and (relatively) luxurious services run between larger cities and popular tourist resorts. Tickets can be purchased at main bus stations and sometimes on the buses themselves.

By rail

While trains are a great method of transport within Egypt, particularly the express services, there are no train services to the Sinai region or to the popular coastal destinations such as Sharm el Sheikh.

By road

Although all the main car rental agencies offer services in Egypt, driving in the country can be dangerous for those unused to the local roads, and congestion problems in the cities can make it a frustrating way to get around.

General travel information

Visitors from the EU will require a visa to enter Egypt; those travelling to Sharm El Sheikh, Dahab, Newiba and Taba for a period of up to two weeks receive a free visa stamp in their passports upon arrival.
