Cyprus tourist official proposes new marketing drive

A new marketing campaign has been proposed by officials in order to attract more visitors to Cyprus.
Thassos Katsourides from the Association of Cyprus Travel Agents stated that more needed to be done to attract visitors from a wider range of countries.
Speaking to the Financial Mirror, he said the island was already highly popular with British holidaymakers, with at least 56 per cent of foreign arrivals hailing from the UK.
However, he stated that plans to attract people from other countries such as France and Italy had to get underway.
Such a move would be beneficial for many reasons, as it would lead to a more lucrative tourism sector in Cyprus and new opportunities for overseas property investors.
Mr Katsourides suggested that a promotional campaign could be an effective way of raising awareness of the island as a viable holiday destination.
He commented: "Marketing must be intensified to acquire a special identity, so that Cyprus will be different from similar destinations."
According to official figures cited by the Financial Mirror, the overall number of holidaymakers on the island rose by 6.4 per cent during the year to September 2007.
