Cyprus lures cultural tourists

In good news for Brits considering property in Cyprus, the island nation is planning to grab a slice of the growing cultural tourism market.
Figures from the World Tourism Organisation showed that between 300 to 330 million people visit religious heritage sites across the globe each year and with its rich religious history, Cyprus could its own niche in the booming marketplace.
Speaking to Reuters, Vakis Loizides of the Cyprus Tourism Organisation said that a 300,000 Cyprus pound tourism campaign would help to promote the island nation's rich cultural heritage.
"Cyprus packs a huge amount of monuments in such a small space. The island's special relationship with saints, like Lazarus and Helen, make it very attractive," said Mr Loizides.
He added that the Orthodox Church was helping to plan festivals and ceremonies for the scheduled religious tours, which will also include important Islamic monuments.
UK investors hoping for good rental returns should be pleased by the comments of George Michaelides, chairman of the Cultural and Special Interest Tourism Association, who told Reuters: "This will help diversify the product of the island, change its image. These people come off-season and stay longer than the average tourist.
"They are better spenders, who go around and not just to the pub."
