Cheaper airport charges in Cyprus

Cypriot government officials have denied recent claims that airport charges on the island would be more expensive than nearby destinations, according to the Cyprus Mail.
The International Air Carriers Association (IACA) had argued that travel to and from Cyprus would become increasingly costly, due to the imposition of passenger levies in April, July and November.
However, while visiting the construction site of the new Larnaca airport, transport minister Harris Thrassou denied that development plans by airport operator Hermes would lead to a hike in charges.
He also dismissed the allegation that government revenue would be as much as €220 million.
"The reality is that the revenue is less than half of what they claim. The airports in Cyprus will not be more expensive than those in other European countries," he stressed.
"In fact, we will be much cheaper than Eleftherios Venizelos [in Athens] and around 50 per cent cheaper than Malta, which is also a tourist destination," he added.
Adoption of the euro in 2008 should see the buy-to-let boom in Cyprus continue to flourish, with three-bedroom villas available for as little as £140,000.
