Travel and transport
International airports
In the south of Cyprus, the international airports are Larnaca and Paphos. There are direct flights to both of these from numerous UK airports and most major European destinations, and several airlines offer routes including First Choice, thomsonfly, flyglobespan, flythomascook and Monarch. There is an international airport in the north of Cyprus, at Ercan, though currently it is only served by Turkish airlines.
Travel restrictions lifted
The Cypriot government did have a law in place restricting the number of ‘flight-only’ seats sold on flights from the UK. This has now been lifted, allowing holidaymakers to book their flights and accommodation separately which has opened the market up to buy-to-let investors, and yet has not had the effect of reducing the average spend per visitor.
Cyprus can also be reached by ferry from Greece.
North-south divide
Travelling around the island is complicated by the north-south divide. However, since April 2003 it has been possible for EU citizens to cross freely from Cyprus to the Turkish occupied north and back again, as long as they have their passports with them.
Road network
Once in Cyprus, many visitors find public transport on the island to be of a poor standard, which is why most of the residents drive. It is a convenient way of navigating the island, but visitors should be aware that the driving style in Cyprus may be more erratic than they are used to. However, the road network is well-maintained. Non-residents can bring their cars to Cyprus for a maximum of three months.
Public transport
Buses are cheap and run between the larger towns and villages, though services are much more frequent and efficient in urban areas. There are also shared taxis which operate in some cities up until early evening, and can be ordered to and from anywhere in city limits. However, by the nature of the service, journeys by shared taxi can take a relatively long time.
No vaccinations are necessary for travelling to Cyprus and visas are not needed for entry by citizens of the EU.
