Fashionable retreat
Chile’s main beach resort, Viña del Mar, is ideally situated to draw the weekend crowds from the nearby cities of Valparaíso and Santiago. The fashionable resort originally became popular as a weekend retreat and garden residence for the wealthier Chilean residents, and it remains well-known for its beautifully maintained parks which have given the town the nickname of ‘La Ciudad Jardin’ or ‘The Garden City’.
Viña del Mar today
Since the resort was first founded back in the 1870s, it has grown in popularity and development. The appeal of its beaches remains one of its strongest selling points, but today’s Viña del Mar also has five-star hotels, top restaurants, a municipal casino, horse racing, a buzzing nightlife and a variety of other facilities which have supported the city’s evolution into the tourist centre of Chile.
City centre
Moving back from the beachfront, Viña del Mar’s impressive city centre has the facilities and appeal to make it a popular choice of tourists and house buyers in its own right. The downtown part of Viña del Mar is popular with residents as it is close to shops and to the attractive Quaint Verger Park, and is still just 15 minutes on foot from the beach.
Cultural appeal
As well as being a popular tourist destination, the city is also the fourth largest in Chile with a population of approximately 319,000. The cultural appeal of the city comes into its own during the summer, when a number of concerts, exhibitions and various other events attract tourists from other parts of Chile as well as from overseas.
Property market
The areas in and around Viña del Mar offer the property investor a variety of options. There are always properties available in the downtown part of the city itself and prices are surprisingly low. There are nearby areas within a short distance of the city which have their own centre for amenities and entertainment, but are just a short journey from Viña del Mar.
Investment market
Concón, for example, is a traditional town just a few miles along the coast. It is just five minutes away from Viña del Mar by car, yet it is one of the cheapest areas for property. The strength of the property investment market in and around Viña del Mar is that, unlike many primarily tourism-driven destinations, the attractive and lively city remains busy throughout the year, although the beachfront is quieter during the winter months.
