Britons 'head for long-haul destinations'
A growing number of British holidaymakers are choosing to visit countries outside Europe, official data has revealed.
According to the Office for National Statistics, 79 per cent of people from the UK chose to stay in Europe during 2006.
This means that more than one in five people opted to visit long-haul destinations, which indicates the considerable appeal of these countries among Britons.
Figures also showed that the number of foreign trips undertaken by UK nationals went up by 3.7 per cent between 2005 and 2006, rising to 69.5 million.
More than eight in ten people chose to travel by plane, which could be a reflection of how more distant countries are attracting large numbers of British holidaymakers.
The findings may prove to be of interest to people who have chosen to buy property in long-haul destinations including Cape Verde or Brazil, as they show a sizeable market for visiting such places.
Earlier this month, Travel Weekly stated that the reduced cost of flying further afield was one reason for their increased popularity, as they were now more affordable places to visit.
