Locations - Sal

Oldest of the islands

Investors in Cape Verde have a number of different islands to choose from (in all, Cape Verde is made up of ten main islands and eight islets). The island of Sal is one of Cape Verde’s northern group of islands, and is known for its sandy white beaches, which ensures the island attracts a steady stream of tourists. The island is Cape Verde’s oldest and was formed around 50 million years ago. It has a lagoon which was found to produce salt after the rain, and before tourism took over, the island grew around the salt collection industry.

Rising population

Sal’s main town, Vila dos Espargos, has one of Cape Verde’s international airports, and tourists now flood in on direct flights from UK as well as other European destinations. This growing industry has led many residents from other islands to migrate to Sal, and this has almost doubled the island’s population in just ten years. The unemployment rate on Sal is comparatively low - 12% against a national average of around 18% - so it is seen among other Cape Verdians as the best island for job opportunities.

Tourist destination

Other than Vila dos Espargos, this small island only has one other major community: the popular tourist resort of Santa Maria. This town was previously known for its tuna-canning and salt works, but has since evolved into one of Cape Verde’s prime tourist areas, largely the result of its stunning Santa Maria Beach. The water is warm throughout the year, and there are many restaurants and bars nearby to keep visitors occupied after they leave the beach.

Property market

Much of Cape Verde’s investment and development has been centred on Sal over recent years, and its rising popularity among tourists has helped to ensure that property prices in the country have grown steadily during this time. It has a number of hotels to cater for its visitors, who are mostly German, Italian and French. The property market on Sal has seen particular interest and activity from British and Irish buyers.
