Bulgaria ranked cheapest in Europe
British investors seeking low cost living should flock to Bulgaria, following a recent survey.
The Post Office Holiday Costs Barometer – which surveys the cost of everyday items across 15 countries – showed that a shopping basket of ten items could be picked up for just £16.86 in Bulgaria, compared to a hefty £69.41 in the USA.
Kevin McAdam, head of travel services for the Post Office, said that the new figures illustrated the importance of considering the cost of essentials.
He said: "You have to be careful when comparing costs in different countries. It all depends on their relative cost of living and it pays to be aware that favourable currency rates – like those currently available for the US dollar – do not necessarily mean a destination will be cheap."
The study showed the fantastically low prices of Bulgarian living with a packet of cigarettes costing £1.55, a bottle of Heinken a miniscule 77p and a three-course meal for two available for only £9.66.
The Post Office reported an 83 per cent in enquiries for Bulgarian currency in the two weeks preceding Easter - with great coastal accommodation, excellent skiing, cheap flights readily available and a staggeringly low cost of living, it's not hard to see why.
