Bansko skiing boosts Bulgarian prices
Ongoing developments near the Bansko ski resort in Bulgaria have caused a rise in property prices in nearby Blagoevgrad.
The annual Bansko Jazz Festival and a huge share of the nation's tourism market, thanks to its popular pistes, has made Bansko one of the most profitable investment destinations in Bulgaria, with thousands of tourists visiting every year.
Its popularity seems to be rubbing off on other south-western regions, according to the Sofia Echo.
Citing figures from Darik News, the daily newspaper of the Bulgarian capital reported yesterday that property prices in Blagoevgrad have doubled in the last two months.
Housing in the 76,000-population town had been assessed at 450 leva (£156) per square metre, but is now costing between 500 and 550 leva (£338 and £372) per square metre, a rise put down to increasing construction in and around the region.
The booming Bulgarian property market continues to attract British investors, with two-thirds of all properties bought by foreigners in the country during 2006 purchased by UK speculators.
