Locations - Borovets
Popular skiing resort
Borovets is the oldest of Bulgaria’s ski resorts with a history that dates back to 1896. It is the second largest resort and has hosted alpine skiing World Cup events twice. It is comprised of three main areas for skiing – Borovets, Yastrebets and Markujika – with 40km of pistes, eleven ski lifts, and facilities for night skiing. Fourteen snow cannons with artificial snow are installed to guarantee snow cover regardless of weather conditions.
Year-round potential
Between November and May, Borovets has permanent snow cover. The resort is working on expanding its year-round tourism potential, and summer visitors can currently enjoy a range of outdoor activities such as horse-riding, hiking, cycling and climbing. Golf will soon be another year-round tourism draw as a Jack Nicklaus course is planned to open in 2008.
Picturesque position
Borovets is situated on the northern slopes of the Mousala ridge in the eastern part of Rila. Mount Mousala, standing at 2935m tall, is the highest peak on the Balkans. The resort is nestled in pine woods 1390m above sea level - its highest pistes are at 2600m.
Accessible location
Borovets enjoys an easily accessible location. Only 12km away is the town of Samokov with its amenities of bars, restaurants, shops and hotels. The capital Sofia is located 72km away and it takes around 45 minutes to drive to Sofia airport.
Super Borovets project
This is one of Bulgaria’s largest and most expensive investment and development projects. The Super Borovets project will enlarge the current Borovets town to encompass the nearby towns of Samokov and Beli Iskar. The resort will be divided into three levels catering to all types of visitor, from those looking for a cheap self-catering holiday through to those looking for five-star hotel accommodation. The project started in 2004 and was originally planned to be completed by 2009, however setbacks are likely to delay progress. However, once the project is completed, Borovets will become even more attractive as a resort, both for holidaymakers and for potential investors.
