Bulgaria’s largest ski resort

Bansko is Bulgaria's largest and newest ski resort. It is situated at the foothills of the Pirin Mountains and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is considered to be the most developed ski and winter resort in Eastern Europe and one of the best in Europe. The ski season here runs from mid-December into the middle of May.

Infrastructure improvements

Bansko’s ski facilities are continually being improved. A new gondola lift was built in 2003 to replace a minibus ride up to the ski slopes of Todorka and since then construction on several other gondolas and ski lifts has begun. There are also plans to build new housing and recreational facilities around the gondola, on the south-west end of the town by the river.

Growing popularity

These improvements are adding to Bansko’s popularity, both with tourists and with those looking to purchase investment property in Bulgaria’s ski resorts. The improvements have prompted the German Kempinski hotel group into opening a new five-star hotel in a prime position on the edge of the main piste, the Hotel Grand Arena.

Year-round tourism

Bansko also offers year-round tourism, thanks to the beauty of its natural landscape. The mountain peaks near the town, the numerous lakes and the old pine woods make it a popular site for all sorts of recreation. Summer-time activities include hunting, fishing, walking, mountain biking and sightseeing. In recent years, the town has gained international popularity after the start of the annual Bansko Jazz Festival.

Brisk property market

The real estate market in Bansko is moving at a brisk rate, with a number of new resort projects in development, including several high rises. While Bansko has some of Bulgaria’s highest property prices, they are still reasonable compared with other investment markets on the rise. Whether there will still be any bargains to be had once the improvements to the resort’s infrastructure are made, remains to be seen, however.
