Historic seaside town
Set on the Black Sea Coast in the north-east of Bulgaria, Balchik is an attractive seaside town with a romantic feel and natural beauty that ensures its popularity with tourists. It was under Romanian rule between the Balkan War in 1913 and 1940, when it was returned to Bulgaria. As well as its historical interest – the town is around 2,600 years old – Balchik has its own art gallery, museum, botanical gardens, and its long strip of coast has 30km of beaches as well as a harbour area where visitors can go sailing or visit one of the restaurants overlooking the bay.
Summer tourism
Balchik’s main tourist season is, predictably for a seaside town, in the summer. Most of the town’s tourists come from within Bulgaria or from Russia, with fewer coming from the Czech Republic, Poland and the Nordic countries. Tourism is vital to Balchik, with hotel and restaurant businesses being the main source of income for the local population. The town has a developed yacht tourism thanks to its harbour with berthing for 60 yachts and its organised yacht trips on the Northern Black Sea.
Botanical garden and palace
Balchik is famous for its botanical garden and palace - one of its year-round attractions. The garden houses many unique and rare plants while the palace used to be the residence of the Romanian Queen Maria at the beginning of the 20th century.
EU investment
Like many areas of Bulgaria, the town has benefited from EU aid and other investment, though its new developments and infrastructural improvements have been created in an environmentally sensitive way, so have not detracted from the town’s authentic charm. The property market is expected to receive a boost from the nearby Gary Player golf course currently under development 2km away in Topola, which will increase visitor numbers out of season.
