This region is located on Brazil’s Northeast coast and its major city is Salvador. The Bahia area offers all the qualities tourists could want from a Brazilian location: year-round sunshine, outstanding beaches and great examples of the country’s vibrant culture. This has led to tourist figures for the region reaching levels never previously seen.

São Salvador da Bahia

Bahia's capital is the city of Salvador, or to give it its full name, São Salvador da Baía de Todos os Santos. Salvador has over 2.2 million inhabitants and is the third largest city in Brazil. The city was for a long time named Bahia, like the state, and this is how it is still referred to on many older maps.

Modern Salvador

The metropolitan area of the city is the wealthiest in the north-eastern region of Brazil. The city has a marked African influence thanks to the fact that 80% of the population is of Black African origin, creating a place rich with culture.

World Heritage Site

Salvador’s historic centre, or the Pelourinho, houses many historical monuments dating as far back as the 17th century which is part of the reason UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in 1985.

Agriculture and industry in Bahia

Bahia state has the largest GDP of any in the north-east of Brazil, mainly due to the fact that it is the main producer and exporter of cacao (the tree whose seeds are used to make cocoa and chocolate) in Brazil. It is the location of many important agricultural and industrial sectors and one of the richest states in minerals in the country. Income levels and the cost of living are still lower in Bahia than in first world countries, however.

Emerging property market

The main property development in Bahia takes place in the tourist regions as this is where investment has been poured into the infrastructure, for instance the construction of a new airport. Property prices currently remain low, however experts are predicting strong capital growth and highlighting that there are investment opportunities to be had in the state’s tourist areas.
